Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has revealed that he faced pressure to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but firmly resisted the overtures, emphasizing that only God and the electorate who voted him into office can determine his political allegiance.

Speaking on Saturday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos, Governor Mutfwang said the pressure came from a senior APC chieftain. “It is not a lie that they also put pressure on me. But I told them only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, then the other is you, the people,” he stated. Turning to the audience, he asked, “Have you asked me to go anywhere?” The crowd responded with a resounding “No.”

The governor’s remarks come shortly after stakeholders of the APC in Plateau State rejected reports that he was considering joining the ruling party. At a recent APC stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, a motion suggesting Mutfwang’s possible admission into the party was overwhelmingly rejected. Festus Fuanter, former Deputy National Secretary of the APC, told the meeting, “We don’t want anybody coming to our party. You do your thing, and we’ll do ours.”

Reacting to the rejection, Governor Mutfwang said those opposing his alleged defection were acting out of fear. “The truth is that 60 to 70 per cent of the people in the APC on the Plateau will be glad to have us in their party. They know I will not join them, and that is why they are angry and trying to twist it,” he said, adding that the matter was not one he intended to dwell on.

The governor, who is up for re-election in 2027, insisted that the decision to remain in the PDP was final and would not be influenced by political pressure. His declaration brings reassurance to the opposition party, which has faced several defections since the 2023 general elections.

Since the last general elections, the PDP has lost governors in Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Enugu to the APC. Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri has also resigned from the party and is reportedly heading to the ruling party. Other PDP governors in Taraba, Zamfara, and Osun had also been reported to be exploring a switch to APC, though some have refuted the claims.
