*Says Panellists Spoke Within Their Remit At Conference, “Bar Cannot Be Inclusive While Excluding New Wigs”
Emeka Obegolu, SAN, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference Planning Committee (AGCPC) 2025, has emphasized the crucial role of young lawyers in shaping the future of the profession, following the conclusion of this year’s conference.
Obegolu said the committee, constituted by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, was tasked with ensuring a memorable experience for attendees while reflecting the NBA President’s vision of an all-inclusive Bar. According to him, the 2025 AGC exceeded expectations, despite some criticisms regarding the prominence given to younger lawyers on conference panels.
Addressing concerns, Obegolu clarified that panelists such as Chief Osita Chidoka, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Deji Adeyanju, and Senator Dino Melaye were included appropriately and did not speak beyond their remit.
He explained that Chief Chidoka contributed to a panel titled “Setting Forth at Dawn,” sharing his experiences as a young appointee to high public office and later as a minister. Kanayo O. Kanayo moderated the same session, drawing from his pioneering work in Nollywood, notably the iconic Living in Bondage. Deji Adeyanju participated as a human rights activist on a panel featuring both young and senior lawyers. Senator Dino Melaye was a last-minute addition to discuss maritime security and legislative oversight.
Obegolu stressed that including young lawyers enriches discussions, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative approaches, and insights into emerging legal trends and social issues. He argued that the Bar cannot truly be inclusive if younger members are excluded from conferences simply for being “new wigs.”
“Out of more than 150 speakers at the conference, complaints about a few young lawyers underscore how unfairly we have treated this segment of the profession,” Obegolu said.
He concluded by affirming NBA’s commitment to empowering young lawyers, quoting former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan: “Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace.”
Obegolu thanked all participants for contributing to a successful conference and encouraged continued mentorship and inclusion of younger lawyers in the NBA’s activities.
