The National Youth Service Corps has disowned a viral notice claiming that a special redeployment window has been opened for corps members on grounds of national security, health and the general situation in the country.

The Scheme on Friday flagged the circulating message as fake through its verified social media account, warning corps members, parents and members of the public not to act on it.

The fraudulent message, titled “URGENT NOTICE: NYSC REDEPLOYMENT,” was addressed to parents and guardians and claimed that a redeployment window was “now open” because of “issues of National Security, Health, and State of the Nation.”

It urged corps members purportedly having genuine grounds for relocation to apply immediately to guarantee their safety, proper placement and timely completion of the national service programme.

The notice further provided two telephone numbers through which interested persons were asked to make contact “ASAP,” while claiming that valid documents would be required and applications must comply with NYSC guidelines.

Reacting, the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters marked the notice with a bold “FAKE NEWS” inscription and issued a disclaimer distancing the Scheme from the communication.

The NYSC did not identify the persons behind the purported notice or disclose whether investigations had commenced to trace those responsible.

The development has, however, renewed concerns over fraudsters exploiting deployment and redeployment processes to target unsuspecting prospective and serving corps members as well as their parents.

The Scheme has repeatedly maintained that deployment, relocation and redeployment matters are processed through authorised NYSC channels and that it does not appoint private individuals or agents to process such requests through personal telephone numbers.

Corps members seeking relocation on recognised grounds are expected to use the procedures established by the Scheme and submit the necessary supporting documentation through official channels.

The NYSC has consequently urged corps members and members of the public to verify information purportedly originating from the organisation through its official website, portal and verified social media platforms before responding to requests or making payments.

The Scheme also advised Nigerians to be wary of unofficial telephone numbers and individuals promising to facilitate deployment or redeployment in exchange for money.
