Justice Franca Yuwa was on Monday sworn in as a judge of the Benue State High Court, with Governor Hyacinth Alia presiding over the ceremony at the Government House in Makurdi.

The event drew top government officials, members of the judiciary, legal practitioners and other dignitaries, marking what the governor described as a significant step in strengthening the state’s justice system.

In his remarks, Governor Alia said the elevation of Justice Yuwa was not the result of favoritism or patronage but a recognition of years of discipline, professionalism and proven integrity within the judiciary. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to judicial independence, stressing that his government would not intimidate judicial officers or weaponise the courts for political convenience.

The governor reminded the new judge that her words and decisions would shape lives and destinies beyond the courtroom, urging her to uphold the highest standards and dispense justice fearlessly and impartially. He assured the judiciary of continued non-interference by his administration, while noting that judicial independence must be exercised with responsibility and accountability. According to him, the people of Benue State expect courts that are firm, fair, accessible and guided by truth and equity.

In her acceptance speech, Justice Yuwa expressed gratitude to Governor Alia for approving the creation of a slot on the High Court bench and appointing her as a judge. She also thanked the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpyambese, under whose leadership she served as Chief Registrar of the High Court for two and a half years, appreciating his mentorship and support.

The new judge further acknowledged the National Judicial Council for recommending her appointment and the Benue State Judicial Service Commission for completing the processes that led to her elevation. Reaffirming her commitment to the oath of office, she pledged to dispense justice without fear or favour and to work towards the speedy disposal of cases.
