The family of a woman wrongly lynched by a mob at the Ipata Market area of Ilorin, Kwara State, has demanded justice over her killing.
The deceased, identified as Khadijah, was mistaken for a kidnapper on Thursday and brutally attacked before she later died at the General Hospital, Ilorin, from severe injuries.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the deceased was destitute and not a kidnapper as alleged by her attackers. She added that Khadijah’s body had been deposited in the hospital morgue while investigations into the matter had commenced.
Speaking anonymously, the sister of the deceased narrated how Khadijah battled a brain-related illness for years after the death of their parents, stressing that she struggled to care for herself and her children.
“Despite her condition, Khadijah had children who now remain without their mother,” she lamented.
“She was not a criminal, she was only sick. She battled with brain illness for many years. Sometimes, she would go out to beg for money just to feed herself and her children before returning home. We, her family, tried all we could to support her. It is very painful that people mistook her condition for criminality and ended her life in such a cruel manner.”
The grieving sister described the mob action as barbaric and unjustifiable, calling on President Bola Tinubu, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and security agencies to ensure that those behind the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
