The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has disclosed that its investigation into the incident involving Ms. Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger who was reportedly stripped at Lagos airport after a heated confrontation with a flight attendant, has yielded new information. The authority plans to release a preliminary report in the coming days.
Speaking exclusively to LEADERSHIP, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, confirmed that officials had met with the airline crew, including the air hostess involved, Julie Edwards, while postponing further discussions with Emmanson to gather additional details.
“Fresh evidence has emerged since Ms. Emmanson provided a detailed account of the events on the aircraft,” Achimugu said. “We asked her questions based on information from our meeting with the airline, as well as eyewitness accounts from the terminal before her boarding. These details were not previously public.”
He stressed that the panel’s role is preventive, not judicial, aiming to fully understand the incident and forestall similar occurrences in the future. “The young lady was allowed to recount the events so we can compare her testimony with that of the airline and other parties involved. We are still following up with a few more individuals to tie up loose ends,” he added.
CCTV footage is also being reviewed to clarify certain aspects of the case. “While some questions have been answered, we await full review of the CCTV evidence before concluding the investigation,” Achimugu explained.
The NCAA assured that a preliminary statement outlining findings would be issued soon. “There will not be another meeting with the passenger unless she has more to add. This is not a court proceeding but an inquiry to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he stated.
Achimugu concluded, “We don’t want this happening in our industry anymore. Some of the new information has come to light through Ms. Emmanson and eyewitnesses. Once we tidy up a few loose ends, we’ll release our preliminary findings in a matter of days.”
