The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has secured a venue for its national convention in Abuja, just hours after raising concerns over its inability to access event locations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The party had earlier alleged that it was denied the use of both Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium for the convention scheduled for April 14, 2026.

In a post on X on Monday, ADC chieftain Kola Ologbondiyan disclosed that the party had yet to secure a venue less than 24 hours to the event, despite multiple efforts to obtain approval from relevant authorities.

According to him, a formal request was submitted to the office of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, seeking permission to use Eagle Square. Although the application was acknowledged, no official response was received.

He added that the party also approached officials of the Ministry of Sports Development for access to the velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, but the request was declined.

Ologbondiyan further alleged that several privately owned event centres in Abuja turned down the party’s requests due to fears of possible government backlash.

Despite the setbacks, the ADC maintained that the convention would proceed as scheduled in Abuja.

A letter dated April 7 and signed by Chinedu Idigo showed that the party had formally applied to use Eagle Square for a non-elective convention expected to attract delegates, stakeholders, and observers from across the 36 states and the FCT.

The party assured authorities of full compliance with security protocols and readiness to meet all financial obligations. However, the request was declined without disclosed reasons.

Hours later, the ADC announced that the convention would now hold at the Rainbow Event Center, located in Garki, Abuja, describing it as a central and accessible alternative for participants.

The development was confirmed by the party’s coalition mobilisation wing, ADC Vanguard, via its official X account.

The venue change followed earlier claims by the party that it faced systematic obstruction in securing a location for the event.

Ologbondiyan had stated that repeated attempts to secure both public and private venues were unsuccessful, alleging that private event centres declined requests over fears of harassment.

However, presidential spokesman Sunday Dare dismissed the allegations, maintaining that all political parties enjoy equal rights under the law.

The situation comes amid an ongoing internal leadership crisis within the ADC, involving factions linked to former Senate President David Mark and Nafiu Bala, following the resignation of former chairman Ralph Nwosu in 2025.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined to recognise either faction pending a court ruling, adding uncertainty to the party’s convention.

Despite the challenges, the ADC reiterated its commitment to holding the convention as planned, noting that INEC had been duly notified.
