Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Amina Augie, has highlighted the daily challenges judges face in navigating complex cases, stressing the importance of practical legal resources, during the launch of Civil Litigation: A Quick Reference Guide To Substantive Law and Procedure, authored by Retired Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie. The 853-page book was unveiled at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.
Justice Augie recounted her experience as a lecturer and judge, noting that no two cases are identical. “When you have a legal problem, there are the facts, there’s the law, and you don’t even know where to start,” she said. “Books like this, particularly in civil litigation, provide the guidance necessary to navigate the complexities of the law.”
She described civil litigation as a field that affects a wide range of people yet remains underexplored in legal scholarship. “You start with the principles, then distinguish one case from another, and eventually find the solution,” she added.
Justice Augie also reflected on the rigors of legal practice and research, noting the demands placed on lawyers and law students alike. Sharing a personal anecdote, she said, “I have four children; none of them studied law. They said they couldn’t handle the constant reading, analysis, and mental rigor required.”
The Supreme Court judge emphasized the value of Retired Justice Adefope-Okojie’s work in equipping legal practitioners with the tools needed to deliver justice efficiently. “The fourth edition of this guide shows the growth of the law and the need for all legal-minded people to be well-equipped to serve society,” she said.
Justice Augie concluded by commending the author for her dedication and service to the legal profession, describing her as a model of grace, integrity, and commitment to humanity.
