Says “Since The Publication Of That List, No Person Has Come Out To Say I Did Not Vote But My Name Appears There”

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, SAN, has dismissed the allegations of rigging and corruption trailing the just concluded national officers’ election of the Association, saying that while the exercise suffered cyber attacks and technical glitches, they did not affect the outcome of the poll.
Osigwe spoke in Abuja after the inauguration of the executive of the FCT chapter of the Association.
The NBA President said the grievances raised after the election were about access to the ballot rather than manipulation of the result, and he drew a firm line between the two.
“The allegation, as I have heard it, was that there were what people called disenfranchisement of voters, that some persons who wanted to vote did not vote,” he said. “There was no allegation that people paid money, or that the system was corrupted, or that there was rigging.”
He restated the point a moment later. “So, to correct the impression, there was no allegation of corruption.”
Osigwe said the publication of the list of voters had answered the suspicion that has followed the Association’s electronic voting system for years.
“Nobody had [alleged that], because the electoral committee has published the names of those who actually voted,” he said. “And this has addressed the previous allegation people have, that because we conduct electronic voting, names are preloaded in the system, or that people’s identities are stolen and votes cast on their behalf.”
He said no member has come forward to contradict the list. “Since the publication of that list, no person has come out to say, I did not vote, my name appears there, my identity was stolen.”
The NBA President acknowledged that the exercise did not run to schedule, attributing the disruption to attacks on the voting platform.
“Unfortunately, our system suffered cyber attacks which disrupted the electoral process, and it did not start until seven and a half hours later,” he said. “And this caused a bit of unease.”
He declined to comment further on the systemic problems, citing the processes still running within the Association.
“Because of some systemic glitches, which I am sure the ECNBA will address in their report, and which is also the subject of dispute resolution before the NBA National Officers Election Appeals Committee, I will not be able to go into [them],” he said.
