Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, on Thursday, handed over 23 brand new 2024 GS8 4WD SUVs to judicial officers in the state, in what he described as a move to bolster the state’s justice delivery system.
Announcing the development via a statement posted on his official X handle, the governor said the vehicles were part of his administration’s broader strategy to strengthen institutions and improve the efficiency of the judiciary.
“I have today handed over 23 brand new SUVs to our judiciary officers as part of our unwavering commitment to strengthening the justice system in Adamawa State.
We remain focused on building institutions that work, and a judiciary that delivers justice without fear or favour,” Fintiri stated.
The handover ceremony, held at the Government House in Yola, was attended by senior members of the judiciary, including the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hapsat Abdurrahman, who received the vehicle keys on behalf of her colleagues.

Justice Abdurrahman lauded the governor’s gesture, assuring that judicial officers would remain steadfast in upholding justice without fear or favour.
“We are grateful for the support. These vehicles will greatly aid our mobility and general performance,” she said.
However, the gesture has stirred criticism from some legal practitioners and civil society advocates, who argue that such executive-sponsored largesse undermines the principle of judicial autonomy. They expressed concern over what they described as the increasing entanglement between the executive and judiciary, calling instead for full financial independence as provided under Section 121(3) of the Constitution.
A lawyer, who spoke anonymously, queried: “Where is judicial autonomy if governors are the ones buying cars for judges? This kind of gift gives the wrong impression and could threaten the perception of judicial neutrality.”
