The Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the Labour Party (LP), led by Senator Nenadi Usman has clarified that it has no existing local government and state organs.

She made the clarification yesterday in Abuja during the official unveiling of the e-registration portal to kickstart the nationwide membership drive in preparation for the 2027 general.

Usman said the exercise marks the beginning of membership registration for every Labour Party member, which will also produce new states and local government organs to form executive arms of the party.

The new development, however, put to rest the contest on existing organs of the party after the Supreme Court judgment of April 4 that removed Julius Abure from office.

She said that the e-registration platform is to enable all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to register as bona fide members without travelling to physical offices.

“The portal has been fully tested and all prior technical issues have been resolved. Members can register from anywhere and download their membership cards.

“Registration is free of charge; no payments are required. Any site requesting money should be regarded as fraudulent,” she stated.

She said that registrants would select their home states, ensuring that membership records are accurate and verifiable.

The LP, according to her, is committed to being a strong opposition party representing social justice and equal opportunities.

“Lessons from previous elections, particularly 2023, highlighted the need for polling agents and a verifiable paper trail in every polling unit.

The party aims to ensure that grassroots members and union affiliates are actively involved in elections, improving transparency and accountability,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Lawson Osagie, Board of Trustees member and trade union veteran, while addressing political and structural concerns, said there were no internal state-level structures or factional divisions on the ground in the party.

Osagie stated that there were no current factions in the party and all organs are guided by the Supreme Court’s ruling and INEC regulations, thus highlighting that the e-registration exercise would form new party organs and their executives.

He said the burden lies on the National Caretaker Committee, which oversees the electoral process and the creation of a verifiable membership register.
