Anambra State Government has warned residents against indiscriminate disposal of wastes in the state, making it clear that defaulters could pay fines ranging from N20,000 to N1 million.

Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, in a statement yesterday, notified residents of the state and other concerned persons that full enforcement of all the state’s environmental laws have commenced.

“Accordingly, all public and private buildings without functional catchment pits, drainage systems, or any approved means of stormwater control will attract strict penalties.”

The commissioner said that anyone caught dropping refuse indiscriminately on roads, expressways, or into drainages would be arrested, prosecuted, and fined.

“The indiscriminate disposal of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics, or any other waste materials at locations other than designated litter points is strictly prohibited.”

Mefor made it clear that offenders would be fined and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He disclosed that penalties for individuals range from ₦20,000 to ₦1,000,000 while that of corporate organizations are from ₦100,000 to ₦5,000,000.
