The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved new rates for the issuance of national driver’s licences and vehicle number plates, effective from 1st November 2024.

The board recently announced the adjustment as part of efforts to enhance the quality and security features of these identification items, aligning with international best practices.

According to the newly revised rates, Nigerians will now pay N15,000 for a three-year motor vehicle driver’s licence and N21,000 for a five-year licence.

Motorcycle and tricycle drivers will also face a price hike, with the three-year licence now costing N7,000 and the five-year option N11,000.

Under the revised rates, Nigerians will now be required to pay a minimum of N30,000 for both standard private and commercial vehicle number plates. Fancy number plates will now be priced at N400,000, while motorcycle number plates will cost N12,000. The cost of a dealer motor vehicle number plate has been set at N100,000.

Additionally, the government fancy motor vehicle number plate has been adjusted to N120,000, while the government standard number plate will now cost N80,000. The price for a government fancy motorcycle number plate has been revised to N50,000, and government standard motorcycle number plates will now be N20,000.

The JTB stated that the new rates would provide enhanced security features, improving identification processes for both drivers and vehicles across the country.

Olusegun Adesokan, the Secretary of the JTB, noted in a circular obtained by BusinessDay that the approval of the new rates is contingent upon the Federal Road Safety Corps effectively educating and raising public awareness about the price increase.

He said, “The secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitisation plans. This is to enable relevant inputs where necessary, as we are confident that a very robust engagement arrangement will ensure the seamless implementation of the revised rates as approved by the board.”
