The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy starting January 2, 2026, citing rising security risks linked to vehicles with unauthorised tinted windows.

The announcement was made in a statement on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, noting that the decision follows a review of emerging security threats and aims to enhance public safety while a related court matter is ongoing.
The police clarified that no court order currently restrains the enforcement of the law regulating tinted vehicle glass. Earlier enforcement had been temporarily suspended to give motorists ample time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.
Recent trends indicate a surge in criminal activities involving vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass, which have been reportedly used to conceal identities during armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of Tinted Glass Permits will resume on 2nd January, 2026,” the statement said.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured the public that the renewed enforcement will be carried out with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and in accordance with existing laws. He emphasised that the Force remains committed to public safety and the rule of law while collaborating with stakeholders to maintain security across the nation.
Motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles comply with the law and to obtain the necessary permits through approved channels to avoid penalties.
