Nigerian entrepreneur Gbenga Samuel-Wemimo recounted a troubling experience on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, revealing how a brand-new iPhone purchased in Lagos was flagged as stolen when he attempted to trade it in at an Apple Store in London.

According to Samuel-Wemimo, his wife had purchased the iPhone in September 2024 at the Apple Store in Jakande, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. On a recent visit to the Westfield Stratford City Apple Store in London, the couple attempted to trade the phone for a newer model, only to be confronted with a startling claim.

“The attendant scanned the iPhone and declared that it had been reported as stolen,” Samuel-Wemimo wrote. “Stolen from where? It was not a used iPhone. It was new, purchased from an approved Apple Store, and we have all the receipts intact.”

After consulting her superiors, the store staff later amended the description to “missing” but informed the couple that the phone had zero swap value.

Reacting to the incident, Samuel-Wemimo criticised the business practices of some Nigerians abroad, noting:
“Nigerians like cutting corners for unhealthy gains and they always believe this is good business for them as long as they were able to make a buck… Nigerian business people must try to do better than this. There is something called integrity; it has a higher value than the dirty gains they think they are getting by playing dirty.”

Despite the ordeal, Samuel-Wemimo said the couple was able to leave the store without further confrontation. He added that experiences like this explain why many Nigerians prefer to shop abroad despite the economic benefits of buying locally.
