Nepal’s former Chief Justice, Sushila Karki, is likely to be appointed as the country’s interim prime minister following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down under mounting pressure from nationwide Gen Z-led protests.
Reuters, citing constitutional and political sources, reported that President Ramchandra Paudel and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel have consulted experts and agreed to back Karki, who has emerged as the protesters’ preferred candidate.
The protests, which began on Monday over a government ban on social media platforms, escalated into a full-blown anti-government movement despite the reversal of the ban. At least 31 people were killed and more than 1,033 others injured in violent clashes, with demonstrators torching government buildings and lawmakers’ residences.
A Gen Z source told Reuters that Karki’s appointment could be confirmed at a meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. (3:15 GMT) at the president’s residence.
Karki, who served as Nepal’s first female chief justice, was controversially removed from office in 2017 by then-Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and a majority of MPs, just months before her retirement. Her name re-emerged after protesters sought the counsel of the Supreme Court Bar Association’s secretary, leading to a virtual vote where she won more support than Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah.
Born on June 7, 1952, in Biratnagar, Morang District, Karki graduated from Mahendra Morang College before earning a Master’s degree in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), India, and later pursued law at Tribhuvan University in Nepal.
In a recent interview, she acknowledged her ties to India, recalling her time at BHU. “I still remember my late teachers, my late friends… I still remember the river Ganga. Besides the Ganga, there was a hostel,” she said.
If confirmed, Karki will be the first former chief justice to lead Nepal’s government, symbolizing a historic response to a youth-driven uprising that has reshaped the country’s political landscape.
