The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest Litigation and Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL, has visited the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of efforts to improve access to justice and provide legal assistance to inmates.

The delegation, led by the Chairperson of NBA-SPIDEL, Prof. Uju Agomoh, was received by the Controller of Corrections, Rivers State Command, CC R.M. Williams, FCAI.

According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rivers State Command, ASC Sunny Chidom, the visit was primarily aimed at creating an avenue for inmates to present their complaints and legal challenges for possible intervention by NBA-SPIDEL.

During the engagement, members of the delegation interacted directly with inmates and listened to concerns relating to their cases and conditions of detention.

The NBA-SPIDEL team also requested a list of inmates who had been given options of fine but remained in custody, as well as inmates requiring other forms of legal intervention, particularly those seeking assistance to secure bail.

The delegation assured the inmates that the cases identified during the visit would be carefully reviewed and that appropriate legal steps would be taken to assist deserving persons within the limits of the law.

Beyond legal representation and intervention, NBA-SPIDEL also expressed its commitment to supporting the welfare of inmates by providing basic items to address some of the needs identified within the custodial centre.

Speaking during the visit, the Controller of Corrections, Rivers State Command, CC R.M. Williams, FCAI, commended NBA-SPIDEL for showing interest in the welfare, legal rights and rehabilitation of persons in custody.

Williams stressed that collaboration between the Nigerian Correctional Service and relevant stakeholders, particularly members of the legal profession, remained important in addressing challenges relating to access to justice and congestion in custodial facilities.

He also noted that such partnerships could contribute to the rehabilitation and successful reintegration of inmates into society after their release.
