The Nigerian Bar Association has announced a ₦120 million institutional partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund for the implementation of a nationwide Justice for Children and Young People programme.

The agreement, which runs from July 9, 2026, to March 30, 2027, will focus on expanding access to justice for children and young persons across Nigeria through legal representation, policy advocacy, professional training and child-friendly justice reforms.
According to the NBA, the partnership marks the revival of significant international development support for the Association following a period of reduced donor-funded institutional engagement.
The Association said the development reflected renewed confidence in its capacity to implement large-scale justice-sector programmes under the leadership of its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN.
Under the agreement, the NBA will undertake policy engagement and nationwide capacity-building programmes for lawyers handling matters involving children and young persons.
The project will also expand pro bono legal representation, establish structured legal-aid mechanisms and provide quality assurance, mentoring and professional support for lawyers participating in the programme.
More than 7,000 lawyers are expected to receive training and certification under the initiative.
The programme will include community-awareness campaigns aimed at educating members of the public about the rights of children and the legal remedies available when those rights are violated.
It will also promote the participation of children and young persons in justice processes affecting them, while advocating reforms designed to make courts, law-enforcement agencies and correctional institutions more responsive to their needs.
The partnership will support the increased use of diversion programmes and non-custodial measures for children in conflict with the law, rather than relying primarily on detention and prosecution.
Monitoring systems will also be developed to assess the quality of legal representation provided to children and track compliance with child-rights standards across the country.
The NBA said the expected outcomes include improved access to timely legal assistance, stronger legal-aid systems, fewer children being held in detention and greater use of alternatives to custodial punishment.
The programme is also expected to support the development of sustainable policies for the protection of children’s rights and the administration of child-sensitive justice in Nigeria.
The Association described the partnership as part of its broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with international development organisations and deepen its involvement in justice-sector reform, human-rights protection and access to legal services.
It added that the initiative would reinforce the NBA’s role in promoting the rule of law while ensuring that vulnerable children and young persons receive appropriate legal protection and representation.
