In a show of solidarity, the undersigned NBA Representatives in the General Council of the Bar (GCB) have unanimously passed a vote of confidence in support of their coordinator, Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins.

The representatives have praised Aikpokpo-Martins for his unwavering dedication, transparency, and effectiveness in coordinating their activities within the GCB.

The vote of confidence comes in the wake of accusations made by the NBA President, Mr. Y. C. Maikyau SAN, during a recent NEC meeting. The representatives have expressed their shock and dismay at the misrepresentation of their activities by the NBA President, which they believe was an attempt to discredit Aikpokpo-Martins due to a pre-existing dispute related to suits initiated by the Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL).

In a statement released by the representatives, they said, “We are puzzled by the notion or belief that someone external to our body, especially someone not a member of the GCB, could appoint or has appointed a coordinator for us. Our coordinator, Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins, was elected through a democratic process during the inaugural meeting, and his leadership has been recognized and accepted by all the NBA Reps in the GCB.”

The representatives have called for clarification on the matter, emphasizing that internal disagreements within the legal community should be addressed with a commitment to truth and integrity. They have urged the NBA President to refrain from making unfounded allegations against members of the GCB, as such actions undermine the collective reputation of the NBA Representatives.

In a video of the NEC meeting, which has since been made public (https://files.fm/u/8zyqphww7u), the representatives claim that the NBA President misled the NEC about the activities of the GCB, ostensibly to elicit predetermined resolutions without regard for the reputation of the members of the GCB who he made scapegoats in the process.

The primary concern of the representatives is to protect their integrity and rectify any misconceptions that may have arisen as a result of the NBA President’s statements. They have called upon the legal community to take appropriate measures to ensure that the NBA President refrains from leading the NEC recklessly and without regard for the far-reaching implications of its resolutions.

The representatives have expressed their disappointment in witnessing the use of the esteemed office of the NBA President for personal and possibly divisive purposes. They have urged the legal community to take necessary steps to address these concerns and restore the dignity and impartiality of the NBA President’s office.
