The Nigerian Bar Association Remuneration Committee has renewed its call on legal practitioners across the country to report cases of professional undercharging as part of efforts to enforce the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order 2023.

The Committee said compliance with the Remuneration Order is not only a professional duty but also necessary to protect the integrity, dignity and economic sustainability of the legal profession.

In a renewed awareness campaign addressed to lawyers, the Chairman of the Committee, Emeka Obegolu, SAN, warned that undercharging devalues legal services, weakens professional standards and creates unfair competition within the Bar.

He urged legal practitioners to remain vigilant and report violations through the appropriate channels, stressing that safeguarding the profession is a collective responsibility.

According to the Committee, every lawyer has a duty to uphold ethical billing practices and maintain the professional standards expected of members of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The Committee encouraged lawyers to report cases of undercharging by sending an email to remuneration@nigerianbar.org.ng or contacting the Programme Officer, Stella Charles Akupue, on 08033888791.

Reaffirming its commitment to strengthening compliance with the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order 2023, the Committee said the legal profession must continue to be built on fairness, professionalism and respect for established standards.

Meanwhile, as part of measures to ensure prompt and effective consideration of matters before it, the Chairman of the NBA Remuneration Committee has approved the constitution of three sub-committees to review petitions received and applications currently pending before the Committee.

The sub-committees are expected to consider assigned petitions and applications and make appropriate recommendations in line with the Committee’s mandate.

Panel One is chaired by Akinlabi Akingbade, Esq., with Ummi Ibrahim Kolo and Chinyere Ofiebor as members.

Panel Two is chaired by Ms. Rachael Princewill, with Fred Izang and Daniel Izang as members.

Panel Three is chaired by Chinedu Agu, with Pius Owhior and M. A. Garba as members.

The Committee said the panels are expected to diligently review the matters assigned to them and submit their findings and recommendations to the NBA Remuneration Committee.
