The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has directed its branches to monitor the trials of #EndBadGovernance protesters across the country.
The NBA President also launched a Pro Bono support initiative for protesters who do not have legal representation.
In a statement released by Bridget Ijeoma Edokwe Esq National Publicity Secretary tasked the Nigerian Bar Association Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) to work closely with the Chairmen and Human Rights Committees of NBA branches in the regions where protesters are currently being prosecuted. The aim is to ensure that no defendant suffers injustice during the legal proceedings.
“The NBA legal team will continue to monitor court proceedings to ensure that the trials are conducted with strict adherence to due process, safeguarding the legal rights of all defendants,” the statement read.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which have been ongoing in various parts of the country, have led to the arrest and prosecution of several protesters. The NBA’s decision to monitor the trials and provide legal support to the defendants is seen as a crucial step in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens.
President Osigwe emphasized that the NBA legal teams are already present in courts and will continue to monitor the proceedings to ensure that human rights of defendants are protected and justice is served.
