The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Port Harcourt Branch, has suspended the branch election earlier scheduled to hold on Friday, June 26, 2026, in compliance with an interim order of the High Court of Rivers State.

The suspension was announced in a notice dated Thursday, June 25, 2026, and signed by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Chukwuma N. Eke, and the Secretary, Mrs. N. Nzewi-Agbasi.
The notice, titled “Notice of Suspension of Election,” informed members of the branch that the election would no longer proceed as scheduled following the interim order made by Honourable Justice S. J. Aprioku in Suit No. PHC/2250/CS/2026: Godsent O. Elenwa, Esq. & Ors. v. Cordelia U. Eke, Esq. & Ors.
“Please be informed that, in compliance with the Interim Order made by Honourable Justice S. J. Aprioku in Suit No. PHC/2250/CS/2026: Godsent O. Elenwa, Esq. & Ors. v. Cordelia U. Eke, Esq. & Ors. directing that the election scheduled for Friday, 26 June 2026, the said election is hereby suspended,” the notice stated.
The committee appreciated members of the branch for their understanding and cooperation.
The decision followed an interim order granted by Justice Sika Henry Aprioku on the eve of the election in a suit filed by some members of the branch over alleged irregularities in the compilation of the voters’ register.
The suit was instituted by Godsent O. Elenwa, Esq., Aminabo L. Davies, Esq., and Odinaka G. Emenike, Esq., for themselves and on behalf of concerned and aggrieved members of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch.
The respondents are Cordelia U. Eke, Esq., outgoing Chairman of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch; Chukwuma Eke, Esq., Chairman of the branch Electoral Committee; and Nonye Nzewi-Agbasi, Esq., Secretary of the committee.
The applicants, in their originating summons, challenged the final list of eligible voters dated June 12, 2026, and published on June 14, 2026, alleging that it was compromised, structurally flawed, packed with alleged phantom voters and affected by the omission of qualified voters.
They also sought a declaration that the Electoral Committee, as presently constituted, had allegedly compromised its neutrality, violated the NBA Constitution 2015 as amended in 2025, and was unfit to conduct the branch election.
Among other reliefs, the applicants asked the court to dissolve the Electoral Committee, direct the President of the NBA to constitute an independent caretaker electoral committee made up of past branch chairmen, and restrain the respondents from using the disputed voters’ list for the election.
At the proceedings, the applicants were represented by Christopher Itamunoala, Dennis Okwakpam, Reginald Ugwuadu and H. F. Bariesia.
The respondents were represented by Sonny Wogu, SAN, Ayodeji Adedipe, SAN, and other counsel.
The respondents reportedly contested service of the court processes, arguing that they were only served a day earlier and needed time to respond properly to the allegations.
After hearing the parties, the court granted the interim order suspending the election and directed the applicants to enter an undertaking in the sum of ₦5 million.
The matter was adjourned to July 6, 2026, for hearing.
