The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) expressed condolences to the families of over 67 Nigerians killed in recent stampedes and called for improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies. The incidents occurred in Anambra, Abuja, and Oyo States during relief item and gift distributions.

“The loss of lives under such preventable circumstances is deeply painful and demands our collective reflection,” NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe said in a statement Tuesday. He commended the generosity of those sharing resources but urged organizers to prioritize safety.

Osigwe called for effective crowd control, law enforcement presence, public messaging on patience, and exploration of safer distribution methods like digital transfers. “Every Nigerian life is precious, and preventing such avoidable tragedies must remain a shared responsibility,” he said.

The NBA president said the association remains committed to advocating for measures that uphold the dignity of Nigerians and prevent unnecessary loss of life. He called on government agencies, private organizations, and individuals to prioritize safety while extending goodwill.

The Christmas season stampedes have sparked national mourning and renewed calls for caution during large charitable events in impoverished communities. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the causes and any lapses that contributed to the deadly incidents.

Osigwe expressed prayers for God to comfort the bereaved families and appealed for support for the victims and preventative action to avert future disasters.
