The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Minna Branch, has decried the alarming rate of reckless shootings and extrajudicial killings by police officers in Minna, Niger State.

It urged the state police to investigate and prosecute officers involved, compensate victims’ families, and implement preventive measures to forestall future recurrence.

The NBA Minna Branch, in a formal letter signed by its Chairman, Barr. Isyaku Barau, and addressed to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, described the killings of innocent civilians in the state as unlawful.

Barr. Barau cited these actions as a violation of fundamental human rights and a threat to public trust in law enforcement.

He highlighted three recent tragic incidents: the killing of a Keke NAPEP rider, the brutal shooting of a female immigration officer near the Obasanjo Shopping Complex, and the recent murder of a young professional footballer in Maitumbi, allegedly at the hands of a drunken police officer.

“These events are part of a troubling pattern of extrajudicial killings,” he insisted.

“We are urging the police command to take immediate action, including conducting thorough investigations, prosecuting involved officers, compensating victims’ families, and implementing preventive measures such as reassessing firearm handling protocols and providing psychological evaluations for active-duty officers,” the chairman maintained.

The NBA Minna Branch further warned that any attempt to shield those responsible would elicit strong legal action and public advocacy while stressing the importance of protecting lives and property and underscoring the need for police reform to restore public trust.
