The Nigerian Bar Association has formally invited the European Union, the United States Embassy, the British High Commission, Yiaga Africa, the Transition Monitoring Group and other reputable international and domestic election observers to monitor its 2026 National Officers’ Elections scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026.

The Association said the initiative reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, free and fair electoral process consistent with international best practices.
In separate letters signed by the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the Association said the participation of independent observers would strengthen the confidence of members and the public in the integrity of the election.
Osigwe described the NBA as Africa’s largest professional association of lawyers, with thousands of members in Nigeria and the diaspora, noting that the body had remained a leading defender of constitutional democracy, human rights, the rule of law and institutional independence.
He added that the Association’s internal elections had consistently been guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and integrity.
The election will be conducted electronically, while accredited observers will monitor proceedings from the Central Election Control Room at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja.
According to the Association, the control room will coordinate election management, technical operations, results collation and observer accreditation.
Observers will also be granted access to monitor the process, interact with officials of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association and witness the declaration of results.
The NBA said the involvement of respected international and domestic observers would reinforce democratic norms within professional institutions and provide independent assessments capable of strengthening future electoral reforms.
The invitations followed what the Association described as recent attempts by external interests to interfere with its electoral process.
The NBA alleged that there had been concerted efforts to procure directives seeking the postponement of the election and the imposition of conditions not contemplated by its Constitution.
It described the development as an unprecedented attempt to interfere in the affairs of an independent professional body and reiterated its determination to protect its institutional autonomy.
The Association maintained that the election would proceed strictly in accordance with the NBA Constitution and the guidelines issued by the ECNBA.
Apart from the EU, U.S. Embassy and British High Commission, invitations were extended to diplomatic missions, civil society organisations and election observation bodies with established records in democratic governance, election monitoring and the promotion of the rule of law.
The NBA expressed confidence that the participation of the observers would further demonstrate its commitment to credible elections and reinforce the principle that the legal profession must lead by example in promoting democratic values, institutional independence and the rule of law.
