The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilesa Branch, has officially refuted a widely circulated news report alleging that a Magistrate in Ilesa ordered a woman to pay ₦150,000 in damages to her boyfriend for failing to visit him after collecting transport fare.

In a statement issued today and signed by the branch chairman, Raymond Oki Esq., the NBA Ilesa Branch described the report as “completely unfounded” and lacking any basis in fact.

“The NBA Ilesa Branch categorically states that this story is entirely false. There is no Magistrate in Ilesa by the name Akogun Oludare, nor has any case of such nature been brought before any Magistrate Court in Ilesa,” the statement read.

The association expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and urged both the media and the public to verify facts from credible sources before dissemination.

“We feel compelled to set the record straight and provide accurate information to the public. We urge media outlets to exercise caution and ensure responsible reporting to prevent unnecessary distractions,” Oki stated.

Meanwhile, TheNigeriaLawyer has also issued an apology to its readers for publishing the unverified report, stating, “We sincerely apologize for publishing the news without verification, as this does not align with our editorial standards.”

Additionally, TheNigeriaLawyer has called on the NBA to champion the development of a centralized database where legal rulings and judicial information can be verified. The platform is also urging the federal and state judiciary to establish such a system to prevent the spread of false information and ensure transparency in judicial matters.
