*Osigwe Commends FJSC, Directs NBA-SPIDEL to Lead Feedback Process on Judicial Shortlist
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has constituted a three-man committee to receive and collate comments on the competence and suitability of candidates recently shortlisted for appointment to the Federal High Court Bench.
This development follows the publication of shortlisted names by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), which, under Paragraph 13 of Part I of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended), has the constitutional responsibility of advising the National Judicial Council (NJC) on nominations for judicial appointments to superior courts of record, including the Federal High Court.
In a statement issued on Friday, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, commended the FJSC, chaired by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, for publishing the names of the shortlisted candidates for public comments and scrutiny. He noted that the step has enhanced transparency and strengthened public confidence in the judicial appointment process.
Recognising the strategic importance of the Federal High Court in Nigeria’s judicial system, the NBA emphasized its commitment to ensuring that only the most competent legal minds are elevated to the Bench. To this end, the NBA President directed the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) to coordinate the collation of feedback on the shortlisted nominees.
NBA-SPIDEL has, in turn, set up a three-man committee chaired by Mr. Olukunle O. Edun, SAN, with Mr. Vincent Adodo serving as Secretary and Ms. Mojirayo Ogunlana as a member.
The NBA invited lawyers and members of the public to submit comments or complaints regarding the competence, character, or suitability of the shortlisted candidates. Submissions should be sent to nbaspidel3@gmail.com within 14 days of the notice, with a deadline of October 3, 2025.
