The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) continues to strengthen its role in national security and governance, as Mr. Bulus Yohanna Atsen, fsi, presented his report on the recently concluded Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 17 of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) to the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, on December 17, 2024.

Mr. Atsen, representing the NBA during the 10-month intensive program as part of EIMC Course 17, was awarded the Fellow of the Security Institute (fsi) upon graduation. The program is specifically designed to equip senior leaders of institutions with the knowledge and tools to tackle complex security and governance issues, aligning with the NBA’s vision of active participation in nation-building.

In presenting his report, Mr. Atsen provided valuable insights into the evolving security landscape and the critical role of legal frameworks in addressing national challenges. He emphasized the importance of integrating multidisciplinary approaches, a perspective honed through the NBA’s strategic collaboration with institutions like NISS.

The NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, commended the Association’s involvement in the program, noting its significance in fostering a stronger connection between legal expertise and national security.

NISS, which gained recognition as a National Institute in 2019, is one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions dedicated to strategic leadership training, alongside the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and the National Defence College. The NBA’s participation in programs such as EIMC underscores its dedication to equipping its members with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s security and governance architecture.

The inclusion of the NBA in the EIMC program is a continuation of the vision initiated under the YC Maikyau-led administration, which sought to deepen the Association’s engagement with key institutions shaping national policy. The current administration under Mazi Osigwe, SAN has reinforced this commitment, seeking to expand the NBA’s influence in addressing multifaceted national challenges.

The report by Mr. Atsen also highlights the broader potential for collaboration between legal professionals and security experts in crafting solutions to contemporary governance issues. The NBA’s active participation in such initiatives demonstrates its resolve to remain a critical stakeholder in shaping Nigeria’s future.
