Following the discovery of COVID-19 palliatives alleged to have been hoarded by some state governors, the NBA Benin branch has condemned the action and is demanding an investigation into these allegations.

Recall that these palliatives are donations from civil society organizations as part of their corporate social responsibilities (CSR), and were meant for distribution to the masses, as a way of mitigating the hardship brought by the pandemic.

Below read the press statement

The NBA Benin branch totally condemns the retention of huge volume of Palliatives long delivered to the State, in the midst of severe hunger, poverty, disease and squalor and now looted.

The Bar calls on the Edo State Government to urgently cause an Investigation into the circumstances leading to the storage, hoarding and eventual looting of large chunk of the palliatives under the close supervision of security agents which has become a rising trend in some states across the Country.

‘The Bar as the Watchdog of the society will continue to support and laud Government’s efforts where they are just, people-friendly and accord with the tenets of democracy and rule of law and will not hesitate in condemning the failure of Government to address certain critical issues and the doing of certain wrongs.

It is for this reason that we are calling on the Government to order an investigation into this matter with a view to sanctioning those who are culpable in this act and making appropriate recommendations which will forestall future occurrence’.

Signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Benin Branch of the NBA, Pius Oiwoh Esq. and Andrew Lawani Esq.
