The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Monday expressed strong support for ongoing judicial reforms aimed at enhancing the independence of the judiciary, addressing systemic delays, improving the administration of justice, and establishing Local Government Election Tribunals.

Speaking on behalf of the Association, NBA Liaison Officer at the National Assembly, Mrs. Mercy Agada, highlighted the NBA’s active participation in the ongoing Constitutional Review. She noted that the professional body has raised both specific and general recommendations aligning with broader stakeholder concerns, particularly those affecting the judiciary.

“The ongoing Constitutional Review addresses a wide range of issues, many of which are directly relevant to the NBA’s professional interests and the general public,” Agada said. “Our proposals focus on strengthening judicial independence, addressing delays in the application of the Constitutional Review, improving justice administration, and establishing local government election tribunals. We also emphasise the need to modernise the legal system to enhance justice delivery and align with international best practices.”

Beyond judicial reforms, the NBA expressed support for the devolution of powers from the federal to state and local governments, as well as the creation of state police to improve Nigeria’s security architecture.

The Association also backed initiatives aimed at granting greater fiscal autonomy to local governments. On fiscal federalism, Agada said: “There is a consensus among many stakeholders, including the NBA, that the Federal Government controls too much of the national revenue. Our recommendations focus on improving fiscal transparency and ensuring a fairer allocation of resources.”

In addition, the NBA voiced solidarity with civil society groups advocating for increased political representation of women and other underrepresented groups through mechanisms such as the special seat bill.
