The national grid suffered a collapse on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, leading to a nationwide power outage. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the development in a public notice on its X handle, stating that the blackout resulted from a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am.

According to AEDC, the outage affected electricity supply across its franchise areas. The company assured the public that efforts are ongoing to restore power, saying, “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding.” Customers can seek further updates via call at 08039070070 or WhatsApp on 08152141414 and 08152151515.

Data from the Nigeria National Grid showed that the megawatt (MW) generated dropped sharply from 2,917.83 MW at 11:00 am to just 1.5 MW by 12:00 pm. Shortly after the collapse, the Nigeria National Grid announced that “System restoration is in progress.”

The grid disruption brought the Disco loads of nearly all power distribution companies (DisCos) across the country down to zero megawatts, except for Ibadan DisCo, which recorded 20 MW. The recorded loads at 11:54 am were:

  • Abuja DisCo – 0 MW
  • Benin DisCo – 0 MW
  • Eko DisCo – 0 MW
  • Enugu DisCo – 0 MW
  • Ibadan DisCo – 20 MW
  • Ikeja DisCo – 0 MW
  • Jos DisCo – 0 MW
  • Kaduna DisCo – 0 MW
  • Kano DisCo – 0 MW
  • Port Harcourt DisCo – 0 MW

The term “Disco load” refers to the amount of power in megawatts allocated from the national grid to each electricity distribution company.

The Abuja DisCo reiterated its commitment to stabilise the grid and restore electricity supply across its service areas as quickly as possible.
