Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly outlined the conditions under which he would consider leaving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) amid growing speculation about a possible defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The lawmaker’s comments followed an invitation from a social media user — a tweep — who urged him to dump the APC and join the ADC, a party increasingly mentioned in conversations around possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Responding directly, Bello made it clear that such a move would not be taken lightly.

Referencing his electoral victory, he wrote: “Bello El-Rufai wins Kaduna North rep seats with 51,052 to defeat the PDP candidate, Samaila who polled 34,808 votes. El-Rufai’s son sets a record by being the first candidate to win all 12 wards in Kaduna North.”

He stressed that his mandate rests with the 51,052 constituents who elected him and not with online commentators.

According to him, the only circumstance under which he would leave the APC would be at the instruction of his father, whom he repeatedly referred to as “Mallam.”

“If Mallam asks me to leave the APC, I’ll resign the seat tonight. I can be non-partisan. My people adore me!” He declared.

He added a bold challenge to the tweep: “I’ll send 10 million to you tonight if you can convince the 51,052 people that gave me this mandate. Do you have an app to confirm?”

While affirming deep admiration for his father, Bello also underscored his loyalty to the current Kaduna State leadership under Governor Uba Sani, describing him as his “boss”.

He revealed that shortly after standing beside his father at a recent gathering, he proceeded to attend a Kaduna APC caucus meeting with the Speaker and the governor, signalling continued alignment with the state’s ruling structure.

He further noted that the APC provided him the opportunity to work alongside respected public officials, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso.

Emphasising his political discipline, he stated, “I will never publicly go against Governor and I will not plan his demise. It is called honour.”

The statement comes amid wider political conversations surrounding Nasir El-Rufai’s evolving position within national politics.

A founding member of the APC and a prominent strategist during the party’s 2015 and 2023 victories, the former governor has recently been linked to opposition consultations and broader coalition talks reportedly involving the ADC.

Although no formal defection has been announced, the ADC has emerged in political discussions as a possible platform for realignments ahead of 2027.

Bello’s response appears carefully calibrated — reaffirming his father’s influence over his political direction while simultaneously asserting that his mandate belongs to the people of Kaduna North.

He concluded by doubling down on his loyalty, saying, “The greatest honour is being Mallam’s son. And I dare anyone to try to call him out.”

Even so, he maintained that honour requires him not to undermine the current governor or destabilise party structures.

With 2027 drawing closer, his remarks suggest that any shift in party allegiance would hinge on both paternal direction and the consent of the thousands of voters who delivered him a sweeping victory across all 12 wards in Kaduna North.
