The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has written a formal petition to the Nigeria Medical Association, alleging manipulation of his medical records and negligent treatment while in the custody of the Department of State Services.
The petition, conveyed through his legal team, was titled “Grave Concerns Regarding My Medical Treatment and Health Management in DSS Custody: Request for Urgent Intervention, Protection of Independent Practitioners, and Immediate Release of NMA Medical Assessment Report.”
The letter, personally signed by Kanu from DSS detention in Abuja and copied to the Registrar of the Federal High Court, Justice James Omotosho, and the DSS Director-General, was made available to newsmen on Wednesday through his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor.
Kanu wrote, “My health, already weakened by my violent abduction in Kenya, has been compromised further by inconsistent, falsified, and sometimes outright negligent medical practices within Nigeria. This letter is intended not only to bring my condition to the formal attention of the NMA but also to invoke the ethical responsibilities of the medical profession under both Nigerian law and international human rights standards.”
He urged the NMA to investigate allegations of record manipulation, protect independent practitioners — particularly Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, who he credited with saving his life — and ensure immediate release of the NMA medical team’s report of September 22, 2025, which a Federal High Court ordered to be filed within four days.
Recounting his arrest in Kenya before his rendition to Nigeria, Kanu alleged brutal treatment:
“For eight days, I was chained by the leg to a wall in a pitch dark, windowless room. On the very first day, my head was slammed against the edge of a car door, resulting in an open wound. For the first five days, I was denied food, water, and medication. When my body began to fail, a doctor was summoned, and I was compelled to ingest medications without explanation.”
He added that the treatment, which he described as “brutality, secrecy, and denial of basic medical rights,” left him gravely weakened before his transfer to Nigeria.
Kanu alleged that upon arrival in Nigeria, tests revealed life-threatening potassium deficiency but claimed DSS-appointed doctors falsified subsequent results.
“From the moment Dr. Nasiru Mohammed assumed control, he began falsifying my test results, recording normal potassium levels when in reality they were dangerously low. Under his so-called care, I continued to experience nosebleeds, fainting, severe chest pains, headaches, and swelling of the feet,” he wrote.
He accused DSS doctors of breaching medical ethics, saying, “Falsification of medical records is a grave violation of ethics. Intimidation of independent physicians undermines patient care and public trust. Failure to disclose test results or medications breaches the principle of informed consent.”
Kanu credited Emeritus Professor Aghaji with stabilising his condition.
“It was his timely intervention that saved me from imminent collapse. My potassium levels rose modestly, my fainting and nosebleeds ceased, and the swelling of my feet reduced. He also confirmed broader systemic problems, including liver, kidney, and prostate issues, as well as tinnitus, which continues to make sleep impossible and my life unbearable.”
He warned that untreated tinnitus-induced sleep deprivation, combined with his other conditions, placed him at risk of “stroke, collapse, or sudden death.”
Kanu concluded by urging the association to act swiftly.
“I respectfully call upon the NMA to ensure immediate release of its September 22 report, protect Professor Aghaji as my physician of choice, investigate DSS-appointed doctors for falsification, and institute independent oversight to guarantee medical ethics in detainee cases. Without decisive action, this neglect may prove fatal.”
