A human rights activist and Abuja based lawyer, Maxwell Opara, has requested the presiding Justice of Court of Appeal, FCT, division, to give a closer date to hear his interlocutory motion on the suit he filed against the Federal Government over the elongation tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali.

The letter is sequel to several delays due to adjournment on the matter.

In a letter by the law firm of Maxwell Opara & Associates, dated 27th February, 2023 and signed by Nnenna Opara, Mrs., his lawyer noted that they filed an appeal in 2021, which came up on the 20th October, 2022 and subsequently adjourned to 16th February, 2023.

“As we are waiting for the date, the first Respondent in disregard of the pendency of this matter before you issued a wrongful letter appointment, renewing/extending the tenure of the present Inspector General of Police (Usman Baba Alkali) for another 4 years after his retirement on the 1st day of March, 2023 which is targeted to destroy the main subject matter and render the decision of this suit nugatory.

“Consequently to the above Sir, we have filed an urgent interlocutory injunction together with an affidavit of urgency seeking the intervention of this court to restrain Inspector General of Police (Usman Baba Alkali) from holding the office of the IGP and not to perform any function as IGP after his retirement on the 1st day of March, 2023.

“Sir, the motion was slated to be heard on the 23/02/2023 but unfortunately the court did not sit and all the matters on the cause list of that day including this particular suit were adjourned to 19th September, 2023.

“Sir, may we humbly appeal that you consider our application and give us a closer date to hear our interlocutory motion expeditiously so as to give it the required urgent attention.”

TheNigerialawyer, reported that Maxwell has earlier asked the court to restrain President Muhammadu Buhari from allowing the present Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to continue in that capacity as from March 1, 2023.
