The Kano State Hisbah Board has cancelled the planned wedding between popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, after investigations revealed that their claim of being in love was fabricated to avoid legal punishment.

Deputy Commander of Hisbah, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed the decision and said the board discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual affection but was instead a strategy by the pair to evade conviction at a magistrate court.

The duo had earlier been arraigned by the Kano State Films and Videos Censorship Board over viral videos considered “indecent.” During the court proceedings, they reportedly stated that they were in a relationship and intended to marry. The magistrate then ordered Hisbah to facilitate the marriage within 60 days or return them to the court for sentencing if the arrangement failed.

Following inquiries, Hisbah established that the couple’s widely circulated photos and supposed pre-wedding content were strictly for entertainment. Aminuddeen said the board could not proceed with a marriage that lacked genuine consent and commitment.

He noted that the matter would now be referred back to the court for appropriate legal action, adding that a forceful marriage could lead to future instability.

Mai Wushirya later admitted that he lied to the court out of fear of imprisonment, confirming that there was no romantic relationship between him and Basira.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the reported order compelling the TikTokers to marry. In a statement, NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, described the directive as unconstitutional and a violation of personal liberties guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to Osigwe, no court in Nigeria has the authority to force any individual into marriage as a form of punishment or moral correction. He warned that judicial overreach of such nature undermines public confidence in the justice system.

He called for a review of the decision attributed to Magistrate Halima Wali and directed relevant NBA committees to monitor the case to ensure the rule of law is upheld.

With the Hisbah Board withdrawing from the enforced marriage arrangement, the case is expected to resume before the court for further judicial review.
