French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that any attempt by the United States to seize Greenland from Denmark would have far-reaching and unprecedented consequences, stressing that France would stand firmly in solidarity with Denmark.

A government spokeswoman, Maud Bregeon, said Macron raised the issue during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, noting that the sovereignty of a European ally must be respected.

“If the sovereignty of a European ally were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented,” Bregeon quoted the French president as saying, adding that France is closely monitoring developments and would act in full support of Denmark’s territorial integrity.

Macron’s warning came as United States President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that American control of Greenland is essential for US national security.

In a post on social media, Trump described Greenland as “vital” to the proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence system being planned by the United States.

“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of national security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” Trump wrote, insisting that NATO would be stronger if Greenland were under US control.

“NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the United States. Anything less than that is unacceptable,” he added.

The exchange has heightened diplomatic tension between Washington and European allies, as Greenland remains an autonomous territory under the sovereignty of Denmark, a fellow NATO member.
