Lord Briggs of Westbourne has been appointed the next President of the United Kingdom Supreme Court and will take office in January 2027 following the retirement of the current President, Lord Reed.

The appointment of Michael Townley Featherstone Briggs, popularly known as Lord Briggs, was approved by His Majesty The King on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor, following the recommendation of an independent selection commission.

“Lord Briggs will take up his new role in January 2027, when the current President, Lord Reed, retires,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement released on Tuesday.

With the appointment, Briggs will become the fifth President of the UK Supreme Court since the institution was established in 2009.

Lord Briggs has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court since October 2017 and brings to the presidency decades of experience in commercial and chancery law, complex litigation and civil justice reform.

According to his official Supreme Court biography, Briggs grew up around Portsmouth and Plymouth as the son of a naval officer before spending the latter part of his childhood in West Sussex.

He attended Charterhouse and Magdalen College, Oxford, and became the first lawyer in his family. He subsequently developed a legal practice specialising in commercial and chancery work before his appointment to the High Court in 2006.

His judicial career included responsibility for the extensive Lehman insolvency litigation between 2009 and 2013, one of the significant complex commercial disputes arising from the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Briggs was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2013, where he also became closely involved in efforts to modernise the civil justice system in England and Wales.

“Lord Briggs was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2013,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

“He was the judge in charge of the Chancery Modernisation Review in 2013 and led the Civil Courts Structure Review in 2015 to 2016, which recommended the establishment of an online civil court.”

In January 2016, Briggs was appointed Deputy Head of Civil Justice and, in that role, served as the de facto head of the Civil Procedure Rules Committee.

He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2017.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Briggs has since handled a broad range of cases at the country’s highest court, with particular involvement in disputes concerning equity and fiduciary duties under the common law.

“During his time in the Court he has been engaged in a range of judicial work, but particularly a series of cases about the role of equity and fiduciary duty in our common law,” the statement said.

Since 2022, Briggs has also exercised delegated responsibility for the practice and procedure of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

His appointment brings together a judicial career spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, alongside extensive work on the modernisation of civil justice administration.

Lord Briggs will formally assume leadership of the UK Supreme Court when Lord Reed retires in January 2027.
