US President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed that the suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is now in custody, revealing that the suspect’s father played a key role in surrendering him to authorities.
Speaking during a live interview on Fox & Friends, Trump disclosed that “someone very close” to the suspect first recognised him and alerted a minister, who then approached the father. According to Trump, the father convinced his son to surrender and personally drove him to police headquarters. “They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now,” Trump said.
Trump praised the cooperation, singling out a US Marshal as “fantastic” during the process. He added that he was relaying details “based on what I’m hearing” but insisted the account reflected how the arrest unfolded.
The president confirmed that the suspect is “28 or 29” years old, clarifying earlier reports that officials had described him only as “college-aged.”
Paying tribute to Kirk, Trump described him as “like a son,” saying the 30-year-old was “a brilliant guy” who helped Republicans connect with young voters and even guided him on TikTok outreach. “I’ve never seen young people go to one person like they did to Charlie,” he said.
Trump added that he deliberately avoided watching the video of the killing, calling it “horrific,” and stressed he wanted to remember Kirk differently.
He also expressed hope that the suspect, once tried and convicted, would face the death penalty. “Kirk was the finest person and he didn’t deserve this,” Trump said.
The president revealed he was informed of the arrest “five minutes before” going on air, commending law enforcement for “a great job” in the investigation. He noted that authorities started with “absolutely nothing” apart from a grainy clip that was “almost useless,” but successfully tracked down the suspect through coordinated efforts.
