A group of lawyers in Ondo State have written to the state’s Executive Council demanding compliance with constitutional provisions to declare Governor Rotimi Akeredolu incapacitated for office.

In a letter dated October 20th, the lawyers including Joshua Sebiotimo, I.I. Bewaji, Myson Nejo and seven others called on the Executive Council to invoke Section 189(1) of the 1999 Constitution and formally announce that Governor Akeredolu is medically unfit to continue governing the state.

The lawyers decried that governance in Ondo has been grounded in recent weeks since Akeredolu traveled to Germany for medical treatment. According to them, the governor’s absence and lack of communication has paralyzed government activities.

As part of their demands, they want Governor Akeredolu to address the state in a press conference within 14 days to confirm his medical fitness to govern. Failure to do this should warrant the Executive Council declaring him incapacitated as constitutionally required.

The Ondo Executive Council comprises the Deputy Governor, SSG, Chief of Staff, Head of Service and all Commissioners who have the constitutional duty to make a declaration on the governor’s medical capacity when necessary.

Governor Akeredolu has been away for weeks since traveling to Germany in September for treatment of an undisclosed medical condition. This prolonged absence has fueled speculations about his fitness and generated calls for the deputy governor to be sworn in as acting governor.

The lawyers threatened to take legal action if the Executive Council refuses to declare Governor Akeredolu incapacitated as demanded. The move could trigger a constitutional crisis in Ondo State.
