The Chief Judge of the Lagos State, Honourable Justice K.O Alogba, has announced the commencement of the annual vacation of the State High Court for the year 2024.

The court vacation is set to begin on Monday, 2nd July, 2024 and end on Friday, 13th September, 2024, both dates inclusive.

Vacation Judges Assigned

The Chief Judge has appointed vacation judges for the various divisions of the Lagos State High Court. In the Ikeja Division, Hon. Justice I.0. Akinkugbe (Mrs.) will serve from 22nd July to 2nd August, Hon. Justice I.0. Harrison (Mrs.) from 5th to 16th August, Hon. Justice A.M. Lawal from 19th to 30th August, and Hon Justice A.O. Opesanwo (Mrs.) from 2nd to 13th September.

For the Lagos Division, Hon. Justice. E.O. Ogundare will serve from 22nd July to 2nd August, Hon. Justice S.L. Sonaike (Mrs.) from 5th to 16th August, Hon. Justice A.A. Oyebanji (Mrs.) from 19th to 30th August, and Hon Justice 0.0. Martins (Mrs.) from 5th to 13th September.

Vacation judges have also been assigned for the Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Eti-Osa, and Yaba/Surulere divisions.

Criminal Division May Sit Throughout Vacation

Despite the long vacation, the Criminal Division of the High Court of Lagos State may sit throughout the period. In cases where a judge of a criminal division is on vacation, a vacation judge may be assigned to handle urgent pending criminal cases.

Urgent Hearings During Vacation

Any cause or matter may be heard by a judge during the vacation period, except on Sundays or public holidays, if it is deemed urgent or if all parties involved agree to it. Applications for urgent hearings during the vacation may be made by summons in chambers before the vacation judge or the judge before whom the substantive case is pending.

New Legal Year Commences 16th September

The 2024/2025 Legal Year is set to commence on Monday, 16th September, 2024. The New Legal Year Services will be held on Monday, 23rd September, 2024.

The Chief Judge’s announcement comes pursuant to the provisions of Order 49, Rule 4 (d) of the High Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedures) Rules, 2019.
