The governments of Ogun, Oyo, Lagos and Osun states have officially declared Monday, August 21, 2023 as a public holiday to mark the annual Isese Day on August 20.

Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun had issued an executive order in March proclaiming August 20 annually as Isese Day in the state. This was later backed by the state legislature in July.

Similarly, the governments of Oyo, Lagos and Osun states recently announced the August 21 holiday through official circulars granting public servants a work-free day to observe Isese celebrations.

Lagos State expressed commitment to supporting indigenous cultures, while Oyo urged worshippers to pray for peace on the occasion. Osun described the holiday as promoting unity and religious harmony.

Isese Day celebrates traditional Yoruba religious and cultural practices. The recognition by major southwest states signifies growing mainstream acceptance of ancestral beliefs as part of their cultural heritage.

Advocates have welcomed the official holiday as a positive step in preserving Nigeria’s indigenous traditions. They encourage traditional worshippers to mark the occasion responsibly.
