The 24 new judicial officers, who took their oath of office in the courtroom of the Chief Judge of Lagos State at the state high court in Ikeja, were charged to commit themselves to study so as to deepen their knowledge of the native law and custom. The Chief Judge, Justice Opeyemi Oke, after swearing them in, admonished them to discharge their duties with the fear of God and to guard their integrity jealously. She, however, urged them to avoid unnecessary technicality but to strive to do sustantial justice at all times, noting that their success or failure would colour the perception of the common man about the judiciary. “I charge you to let the fear and the dread of God be in your hearts as you commit to do justice at all times. “Your responsibilities as judge and members of the customary court are anchored on credibility. Every assault on the credibility of the court is a loss of integrity for the entire judiciary. “As customary court judges and members, you must act with a high level of decorum and within the dictates of your conscience. The fundamental rights, freedoms and principles underpinning our constitutional democracy must guide you,” the CJ said. She stressed that the new judicial officers must, like Caesar’s wife, be above board in their conduct. “I will also enjoin you to give no room for corrupt practices as the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission has zero tolerance for same and will be swift to appropriately discipline any officer found culpable after indepth inquiries,” she added. In her remarks, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, Mrs Olubukola Salami, said the commission hoped that with the 24 new presidents and members “there will be an enhancement in the delivery of justice at the customary court level of the judiciary in Lagos State and speedy disposition of cases would be assured.” Salami urged the new judicial officers to maintain a high standard of professionalism, competence and integrity in doing their job, stressing that they needed to also maintain decorum, particularly while dealing with lawyers who appear in their courts.]]>
