The Chief Judge of Kogi state, Hon. Justice Josiah Joe Majebi, Thursday charged members of the Local Government Election Petition Tribunal to be courageous, disciplined and maintain high level of integrity in the discharge of their duties.
Justice Majebi gave the charge at the premises of High Court headquarters in Lokoja during the inauguration of three panels of three members constituted ahead of the 19th October , 2024 local government election in Kogi state.
The chief judge who told the members that they were carefully selected based on their track records and competence, reminded them that they were the state’s mirror of transparency and fairness and as such, they should carry out the assignment with all sincerity and fear of God.
“Members are those we have found trustworthy and whose track records depict diligence in handling responsibilities placed on them in the past. We have no doubt that the combination of their capacity and impeccable characters would be brought to bear on this call having been notably averse to compromise.
“Therefore, as members of the tribunal, cognisance must be taken of the confidence reposed in you that informed your choice as chairmen and members of these panels.
“You are the state’s mirror of transparency and fairness in this assignment. You should be courageous, disciplined and fearless in your approach to the task before you.
“You must eschew sentiments and not favour any party but dispense justice fairly with the determination to conduct your affairs within the provisions of the Electoral Act, the Constitution, practice directions and other relevant laws and judicial decisions,” the CJ stated.
He further stated that, “As intermediaries between the panels and clients, the bar, judiciary’s partner in the temple of justice, will be glaringly carrying the cross of many of the litigants who seek their representation.
“However, as a counsel, you are not to be weighed by this carriage to the extent of compromising professional ethics and decorum before the tribunal. You should rather see yourself as the vehicle through which grieve is expressed and possible redress secured and nothing more than that,” Justice Majebi warned.
Barrister Jubril Oladimeji Ibrahim, the chairman of the panel who spoke on behalf of other members of the three panel thanked the chief judge for giving them the opportunity and trust to serve in that capacity, assuring that they will discharge their duties creditably in accordance to the constitution.
Members of the panels are :
Jubril Oladimeji Ibrahim – Chairman panel one, Josephine Ajagun – member, Obani Friday Ofakaga – member while Dr. Mohammed Tanko is the chairman of panel two as Abubakar Saiki and Mariam Mohammed will serve as members. Similarly, Agatha Ahuoiza Shankyula was appointed as chairman while Nathson Akoji Idakwoji and Abbas Yunusa Mohammed are to serve as members.
