The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has announced the successful release of Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Mr. Kelvin Okorie, who had been detained by the Nigerian Navy since September 2024. Mr. Okorie was freed on January 11, 2025, following sustained advocacy by the NBA.
Speaking on Monday, January 13, 2025, during a meeting with Mr. Okorie at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja, Osigwe expressed gratitude to all who supported the intervention. He highlighted the NBA’s direct engagement with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, on January 7, 2025, which ultimately facilitated Mr. Okorie’s transfer to police custody and subsequent release.
During the visit, Mr. Okorie recounted his ordeal and reaffirmed his commitment to active participation in Bar activities. His story, Osigwe noted, serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and vigilance within the legal profession.
“The NBA remains resolute in its mission to protect the rights and dignity of its members. We will continue to advocate for justice and ensure that no legal practitioner suffers unlawful detention or maltreatment,” said Osigwe.
The NBA President also extended his appreciation to the National Executive Council, the National Litigation Committee, and all members who contributed to the successful resolution of the matter.
