The Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Samaila Bagudo, has regained his freedom days after being abducted by gunmen suspected to be Lakurawa terrorists.

Bagudo was kidnapped on Thursday night, October 31, 2025, at about 8:20 p.m. in his hometown, Bagudo, the headquarters of Bagudo Local Government Area, shortly after observing Isha’i prayers.

The assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, reportedly stormed the town, seized the 60-year-old lawmaker, and whisked him away to an unknown location, triggering tension among residents.

His release was confirmed late Saturday night by the Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Ahmed Idris, who said the legislator had been reunited with his family.

“Yes, the Deputy Speaker has been released and is now with his family,” Idris confirmed in a telephone interview.

A local radio station in Birnin Kebbi, which first reported the development, said details surrounding his release were still sketchy at the time of filing the report.

Efforts to reach the Kebbi State Police Command for additional information were ongoing, as Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, requested more time to verify the details.

Bagudo’s abduction had prompted a massive joint operation involving the police, military, and vigilante groups, which combed suspected bandits’ routes and forest hideouts in the search for the abducted lawmaker.

Earlier, CSP Abubakar confirmed the abduction in a statement, assuring that a coordinated search and rescue operation was underway.

“The Commissioner of Police reiterates the Command’s unwavering determination to ensure the safe rescue of the Honourable member and the arrest of the culprits,” the police spokesperson stated.

The development came as Muslim and Christian clerics gathered in Birnin Kebbi for an interfaith prayer session, seeking divine intervention over the rising insecurity in the state.

During the session, Governor Nasir Idris urged politicians to avoid politicising the security situation, warning that collective cooperation was needed to restore peace.

Though details about the circumstances of Bagudo’s release remain unclear, government sources confirmed that he was freed unhurt.

His release has brought relief to residents of Bagudo and across Kebbi State, where concerns had grown over the recent surge in kidnappings and banditry.
