The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John T. Tsoho, has approved the establishment of a Vacation Court in the Enugu Division to handle urgent legal matters across the South East geopolitical zone during the upcoming long vacation.

The decision follows a formal appeal by the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oji River Branch, Sir K. Chukwudi Olemeforo, in a letter dated June 24, 2025.

In an official letter dated July 24, 2025, Justice Tsoho announced that the Vacation Court would sit from Monday, July 28, 2025, to Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Hon. Justice M. T. Segun-Bello will preside over proceedings.

The court will handle urgent and sensitive matters from the five South Eastern states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. This includes cases involving fundamental rights enforcement, interim reliefs, and emergency commercial disputes.

The establishment of the Vacation Court in Enugu is seen as a major step towards improving access to justice in the South East, particularly during the judiciary’s annual vacation. Until now, litigants and lawyers in the region had to travel to Abuja or Lagos to attend vacation sittings, often at great cost and inconvenience.

The NBA Oji River Branch, which spearheaded the appeal, argued that a local vacation court would ease this burden and ensure that time-sensitive matters are heard without unnecessary delays.

The Federal High Court, through the communication issued from the Chief Judge’s Chambers at its headquarters in Abuja, reaffirmed its commitment to serving the legal needs of all regions.

“This appeal is well-founded,” the Chief Judge stated, approving the sitting and assigning Hon. Justice Segun-Bello to oversee the Enugu Vacation Court.
