Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, Esq., a rising legal and media professional.

In a statement on Tuesday, Osigwe described the loss of Maduagwu, who reportedly died while attempting to evade an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, as “devastating and unacceptable.” He noted that the tragedy has sent shockwaves through both the legal and media communities.

“Somtochukwu was a shining star in both the legal and media worlds. Her life, full of promise, has been cut short in a most painful and unjust way,” Osigwe said. He emphasized that her death represents not only a profound loss to her family, the legal profession, and the media industry, but also to the entire nation.

While condemning the barbaric crime, the NBA President expressed deep concern over reports suggesting that medical negligence may have further compromised Maduagwu’s chances of survival. “The suggestion that her chances of survival may have been compromised by the failure of a hospital to respond with the urgency and professionalism required is shocking and calls for urgent accountability within our healthcare system,” Osigwe said.

He highlighted the need for urgent national attention on two critical issues: securing citizens from violent crime and ensuring a responsive, humane, and life-saving healthcare system. “Both justice for her death and accountability for any negligence that worsened this tragedy are non-negotiable,” he added.

Osigwe reiterated the NBA’s recent appeal to the Federal Government, stressing that the first duty of leadership is the protection of lives and property. He insisted that Nigerians deserve to live without fear and to trust that the healthcare system will act decisively in emergencies.

The NBA President extended condolences and prayers to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues at ARISE News, and the entire legal profession. “May God comfort them in this difficult time and grant Somtochukwu eternal rest,” he said, warning that systemic failures that leave citizens vulnerable must be corrected.
