As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on all stakeholders to recommit themselves to building a nation where democracy delivers justice, freedom, and inclusive governance for all citizens.

In a statement on Wednesday, Osigwe said June 12 represents more than a historic date — it symbolizes the Nigerian people’s unrelenting demand for accountable leadership, credible elections, and a political system that reflects the true will of the governed.
“Democracy must never be taken for granted; it must be protected, nurtured, and made to work for the people,” Osigwe said.
He stressed that for democracy to thrive, the rule of law must remain its bedrock. Institutions must be allowed to function independently and transparently, and the people’s voices must be respected through functional representation, access to justice, and responsible governance.
Osigwe noted that legal practitioners have a sacred duty to defend democratic ideals, promote civic education, question unconstitutional actions, and ensure that rights and freedoms are not undermined in the name of expediency.
He expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity and killings in parts of the country, the suspension of democratic institutions in Rivers State, and the misuse of the Cybercrime Act to suppress dissent — all of which he described as threats to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“In the face of these threats, the judiciary must rise to the occasion and take a firm stand in defense of democratic principles,” Osigwe added, quoting former U.S. Chief Justice Warren E. Burger: “A sense of confidence in the courts is essential to maintain the fabric of an ordered liberty.”
Reaffirming the NBA’s commitment to justice and the rule of law, Osigwe called on all arms of government and Nigerians to work towards a country where the dividends of democracy are not reserved for a privileged few, but are enjoyed by all.
