The Ekiti State Judiciary is set to roll out a fully digital case management platform that will allow judges to work remotely and lawyers to file and manage cases electronically from any location.

The initiative, known as the Nigeria Case Management System (NCMS), is designed to improve efficiency, transparency and access to justice by automating court processes and reducing reliance on paper-based procedures. With the platform, judges will be able to access case files, review evidence and deliver rulings remotely, without needing to be physically present in court throughout the duration of cases.

The Chief Judge of Borno State and Chairman of the Judicial Information Technology Policy Committee of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kashim Zanna, disclosed this during a roundtable discussion in Ado-Ekiti on the enrollment of the Ekiti State High Court into the NCMS platform. The event was organised by the Ekiti State Judiciary to introduce legal practitioners and stakeholders to the system’s features, including legal mail and e-filing applications.

Justice Zanna explained that the NCMS is an initiative of the National Judicial Council, implemented through the Judicial Information Technology Policy Committee, to streamline and automate court processes and move Nigeria’s largely paper-based judicial system into the digital era.

He noted that the current paper-driven system no longer guarantees effective justice delivery, stressing that the judiciary must keep pace with other sectors where services are now delivered more quickly through digital platforms.

According to him, Ekiti State has already procured the required hardware and completed staff training for the rollout, with stakeholders expressing strong support for the reform. The system is expected to become fully operational soon.

Justice Zanna urged judges to embrace the transition despite any initial discomfort, highlighting the benefits for institutional efficiency, personal well-being and public confidence in the judiciary. He also advised lawyers to upgrade their skills and invest in basic technology such as laptops and case-management tools to adapt to the new digital process.

He added that the platform would enable judges to perform their duties from any location in some instances, from the beginning to the conclusion of a case, while ensuring that citizens receive timely and efficient justice.

The introduction of the NCMS in Ekiti marks a major milestone in ongoing judicial reforms across Nigeria, signalling a shift toward digital legal practice and a more technology-driven system of justice delivery.
