The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Yenagoa Branch, Clement Kekemeke, has raised the alarm over the worsening security situation facing judicial officers in the country, following the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court.

Kekemeke, who was sworn in as the 15th Chairman of the Yenagoa Branch on June 25, 2025, made the call during his inauguration speech, barely four days after his election.

He condemned the continued captivity of Justice Omukoro, who was kidnapped on June 21, and described the incident as a tragic reflection of the vulnerability of Nigeria’s judiciary.

“Our judges are no longer safe. The recent abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, who remains in captivity, is a distressing reminder of the growing threats confronting judicial officers. We cannot claim to uphold the rule of law when those who interpret and protect it are themselves under siege,” he said.

Kekemeke charged security agencies and relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively to ensure the safe return of Justice Omukoro and implement measures to prevent future incidents.

According to him, the safety of judicial officers is fundamental to the survival of democracy and the justice system.

“The courts cannot operate under fear, and justice cannot flourish where judges are hunted. Protecting our judges must become a national priority if we are to preserve the independence of the judiciary and public confidence in our legal institutions,” he said.

Kekemeke was sworn in alongside a new executive council to lead the Glory Bar for the next two years. Other members of the newly inaugurated executive include Beimonyo Brisibe (Vice Chairman), Timipa Theophilus (Secretary), Emmanuel Robert (Publicity Secretary), Gloria Owen (Social Secretary), Samuel Brisibe (Assistant Secretary), Nathaniel Lokoson (Provost), Rachael Omiete (Welfare Secretary), and Oyinkare Omemu-Harrison (Treasurer).

On his agenda Kekemeke reiterated his commitment to the welfare of members and to advancing the relevance of the Bar in shaping public policy.

He promised an inclusive, service-driven administration that will build on the achievements of previous leaderships.

“As immediate past Chairman of the Welfare Committee, I understand firsthand the challenges our members face. We will put welfare at the centre of our agenda and ensure that lawyers in this branch are empowered and respected,” he said.

He further revealed plans for strategic engagement with the Bayelsa State Government, particularly on legal and legislative reforms.

“The Bar must be a partner in governance and policy-making. We shall remain an active voice in matters that affect the legal profession and the society we serve,” he said.
